Traditional Postpartum Care in Toronto

Dear postpartum mothers, it’s time to revel in rest. To sit in reverence for your body’s strength and wisdom. To heal deeply during your sacred postpartum time.

What is traditional postpartum care?

When we look to the wisdom of ancient, global postpartum traditions, we see certain practices that persist across time and place. New mothers are tended to with love and honour; they are kept warm and cozy; they are nourished on every level. Practically, what this looks like is… after she births her baby, a mother snuggles into her warm bed and settles in for an extended period of rest - often around 40 days or 6 weeks. Her loved ones surround her with support. She is fed delicious, healing, nutrient dense foods in bed, she is given herbal baths/steams, her body lovingly massaged with warm oil, and her belly wrapped up with care. A postpartum mother’s only “job” at this time is to rest and feed her baby, nothing more.

Warming Sessions

My intention is to bring warmth to you during your postpartum time, on all levels - physical, emotional, energetic, etc.

Below are some aspects of the care I offer:

Nourishing foods

Appropriate nutrient dense food and drink for healing: broths, soups, stews, oh my…

bodywork

Herbal sitz baths, steaming, massage, belly binding, Closing of the Bones, and more.

emotional support

A soft place to land for birth story listening and processing everything during this tender time.

mama support

Support in building and trusting your intuition around feeding and caring for your baby and understanding their rhythms.

“I am eternally grateful that we had Alex there to support and guide us - to save me from endless Googling, to make bone broth and soup with nourishing ingredients that my body so desperately needed, for all of the sitz baths, hot water bottles and tea to help with recovery, to bring expertise, love, healing, hope, empathy, kindness and friendship into our home at such a fragile and vulnerable time. I don't know how we would have managed without Alex. She helped us not only weather that very intense newborn stage, but thrive and grow as a family during that time. In short, she helped bring me back to life!”

Why traditional postpartum care?

All traditional cultures understood the importance of the immediate postpartum time for healing, after the intensity and expansiveness of pregnancy and birth - as well as the consequences that can arise from lack of appropriate postpartum care and nourishment.

Ancient medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine speak to the significance of the immediate postpartum period and the inherent opportunity during this time: rest deeply and give the body what it needs to heal, and you strengthen your baseline of health for the rest of your years.

Sadly, we usually see the opposite: a degeneration of women’s physical and mental health after pregnancy and birth.

My vision for the new mothers I work with is a postpartum time where they are truly thriving, inside and out, and that they continue to thrive throughout the rest of their motherhood and womanhood journey.

“Alex has made such a positive impact throughout the course of my pregnancy and postpartum care and has given me the tools to be a confident mom. We love you Alex!!”
